The course takes a blended learning approach that combines an elearning course, followed by a face-to-face IV cannulation simulation training and assessment, and a workplace consolidation period before being signed off within your place of work to perform cannulations unsupervised.
The face-to-face aspect of the course can be conducted virtually or in person at The Christie in our state-of-the-art clinical training centre.
Learning outcomes
- Learn to perform effective IV Cannulations and administer radiopharmaceuticals.
- Understand vein and venous assessments.

Course Overview
Maintaining a positive mindset in busy, high-pressure and rapidly changing environments can be a constant and significant challenge. This can place individuals and teams in difficult situations that can cause excess stress, impact morale, and diminish resilience.
While we cannot necessarily change or remove the external factors causing these negative impacts on ourselves and the team, we can improve how we react to situations, how we deal with them and how they affect us.
The course focuses on developing greater awareness and skills to support ourselves and others, cope with stress and build resilience.
Throughout the course, delegates will also learn about the Red Cross’s CALMER framework and how to apply it in various situations.
Learning Outcomes
- Understand what causes and triggers stress, how it affects us and how we can help ourselves to improve our own and the teams resilience.
- Learn about the CALMER framework (Consider, Acknowledge, Listen, Manage, Enable and Resource) and how to use it to support ourselves and others.
- Learn how to cope with difficult situations, challenging behaviours, your own and others’ reactions and sometimes the powerful emotions these can evoke.
- Understand what a resilient person and team are and how to use CALMER to build resilience.
Intended Audience
All staff regardless of level and position.

Course Overview
Delivered by The Christie’s Medical Physics and Engineering department, the Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) course meets the requirement of the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) regulation 15 of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17).
The course provides PET-CT and Nuclear Medicine staff with the knowledge, understanding and skillset to undertake an RPS role within their organisation, as detailed in the HSE’s Ionising Radiation Protection Series No. 6 information sheet.

Course Renewal
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) recommends that a refresher should be considered if any of the following conditions apply:
- New and different radiation work begins.
- New legislation is introduced.
- The RPS has not been active in the role for some time.
- It has been about 3-5 years since the initial training.
Intended Audience
Radiographers, Technologists, Supervisors, Managers, and other suitably qualified/experienced staff who may be required to act as an RPS.
Course Duration
1 day course.
Course Requirements
A desktop computer or laptop with the following:
- Web camera
- Speakers
- Microphone
Mobile phones and Tablets are not permitted as they do not provide the same functionality enabling participants to interact with the course effectively.
As this is an interactive course, if you do not have a device with a web camera, speakers and microphone, you will not be allowed to attend.
Please download the Zoom app rather than joining the call via a web browser as the app provides more functionality and a far more stable connection. You may need to speak to your IT department to assist and allow for the app to be installed.
Furthermore, it is crucial participants attending the course are in a private space free from interruptions and cannot be overheard so they can interact with the facilitators and other candidates. Multiple delegates are not allowed to join from a single computer.
In order to maintain the quality of the learning experience for everyone, delegates who are unable to meet these essential requirements will not be admitted to the assessment.
Course Sales
Places are funded for any organisation in England that is part of the NC1 contract, such as Alliance Medical and NHS NC1 PET-CT Staff.
For any person or organisation outside of the NC1 contract interested in accessing any of our courses from the UK, please contact the Academy to enquire about availability and course cost.
Unfortunately, this course is not available to international candidates.
