Course Overview

Maintaining team morale and building an engaged workforce can be challenging for all leaders, particularly during challenging times. However, by gaining a better understanding and improving stress, mental health, and its impact on resilience, managers can develop more resilient teams, while enhancing their own skills.

The course focuses on developing greater awareness and skills in four key areas: supporting others and yourself, coping with stress, mental health awareness and leading a resilient team.

Throughout the course, delegates will also learn about the Red Cross’s CALMER framework and how to apply it in various situations across the four areas.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand what causes and triggers stress, how it affects us and how we can help ourselves to improve our own and our team’s resilience.
  • Learn about the CALMER framework (Consider, Acknowledge, Listen, Manage, Enable and Resource) and how to use it to support others and yourself.
  • Develop an increased awareness of the different ways people are affected by mental health problems, including anxiety and depression.
  • Identify different behaviours (psychosis, unusual and challenging), the contributing factors and how to use CALMER to support someone who is distressed.
  • Learn how to manage difficult situations, challenging behaviours, people’s reactions and sometimes the powerful emotions these can evoke.
  • Understand what a resilient person and team are and how to lead them in using CALMER to build the ultimate dream team.

Intended Audience

Managers and supervisory staff at all levels.
