Course Overview

This is the practical component of the IV Cannulation and Administration of Radiopharmaceuticals course. Before attending the Simulation Assessment, you must have successfully completed the theory and knowledge module on our elearning platform.

Delivered by The Christie PET-CT Academy’s specialist Clinical Skills team, this widely popular course teaches clinical staff to perform IV cannulations and administer radiopharmaceuticals in a safe learning environment.

The course takes a blended learning approach that combines an elearning course, followed by a face-to-face IV cannulation simulation training and assessment, and a workplace consolidation period before being signed off within your place of work to perform cannulations unsupervised.

The face-to-face aspect of the course can be conducted virtually or in person at The Christie in our state-of-the-art clinical training centre.

Learning outcomes

  • Learn to perform effective IV Cannulations and administer radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Understand vein and venous assessments.
  • Develop awareness of quality patient care and management, including complications, anaphylaxis, and ongoing care.
  • Understand how to accurately calculate tracer doses.
  • Learn how to effectively manage and clean up radioactive spills.

Intended Audience

Clinical Leads, Radiographers, Technologists and Clinical Assistants.

Course Availability

The IV Cannulation and Administration of Radiopharmaceuticals Simulation Assessments are repeated monthly. Due to the one-to-one nature of the practical course, capacity is limited to three participants per virtual assessment and four per face-to-face assessment.

Course Duration

2-hours for the elearning modules plus 1-day for the simulation assessment.

Prerequisites

No previous IV Cannulation experience is required. As this is a blended course, all aspects of the elearning course must be completed before progressing to the face-to-face simulation assessment.
